A Word for 2019 by John P. Kelly
Resolutions, Revolutions, and Revelations
The beginning of each year we often hear people talk about making ‘Resolutions’ or setting goals that they resolve to, or hope to, achieve.
I must confess that the majority of New Year’s goals that I ever set – I never fully achieved. I always had good intentions to fulfill them, but often the results were fleeting.
In my morning prayers during the past two weeks, I sensed that I was hearing the Holy Spirit saying, “Revelation for Resolution.” However, I struggled over the word ‘Resolution’ – I would prefer the word ‘Revolution’!
Then it dawned on me, I needed a mind renewal – a personal internal mindset revolution about some issues in my life. Then came the enlightening; there could be no goals or resolutions that would truly be achieved unless I got a “Revelation” from the Holy Spirit and the Scriptures!
Remembering the ‘law of first things first’, I first prayed with Thanksgiving for what the Lord had done with me last year and praised Him for what He will do in my life this year. Then I asked Him to reveal to me what resolutions I should make for this New Year.
Once again, I sensed the Holy Spirit speaking and this time it was about four areas of my life that needed just one resolution each:
- Deepen my spiritual life.
- Have a more fruitful ministerial life.
- Improve my physical life.
- Develop more and deeper relationships with my spiritual sons and daughters and with other apostolic leaders.
These four simple instructions from the Father included a promise that if I obeyed them they will positively affect my life, my wife Helena’s life, my daughter Shanna’s life, and my granddaughter.
Now that is a Wow! As the scriptures say:
“Observe and obey all these words which I command you, that it may go well with you and your children after you forever, when you do what is good and right in the sight of the Lord your God” (Deut. 12:28).
“The righteous man walks in his integrity; His children are blessed after him” (Pro.20:7).
Setting a New Year’s goal is not a bad thing, but consider praying and coming into the Lord’s presence so He can give you a Revelation that he desires you to attain.
According to Daniel Webster’s Dictionary of 1826, a ‘Revelation’ means:
- “The act of disclosing or discovering what was before unknown to them; appropriately, the disclosure or communication of truth to men by God himself or his authorized agents, the prophets and apostles.”
- That which is revealed; appropriately, the sacred truths which God has communicated to man for his instruction and direction.
And a ‘Resolution’ means: “a fixed purpose or determination of mind; as a resolution to reform our lives…”
Resolution comes from a Revelation contained in a simple instruction that generates a mind that will be set on a fixed purpose to be fulfilled.
That Revelation must be executed until the fulfillment of the instruction. That is the goal of obedience to God.
So, let us not make goals that are based on a want or a desire. Let us make Resolutions based on what the Lord reveals to us, and then ask for His power to help us achieve the resolution he has given us!
“Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen” (Eph. 3:20-21).
My prayer for you is to receive God’s revelations so that you will achieve all He has planned for your life, your children, and your children’s children.
